Posture and Presence: Teaching Racine Kids to Stop Bullies Without Being Aggressive
Bullying has been around for 50 years, and it’ll likely be around 50 years from now. At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we don’t teach kids to ignore the problem. Why? Because when you ignore a problem in life—whether you’re a child or an adult—that problem usually just manifests and gets bigger.
If you want to end the cycle of being picked on, you have to learn to “nip it in the bud” using posture and voice.
The Power of Body Posturing
Bullying often starts with a search for a target. If a child is walking around slumped over, they are signaling a lack of confidence. In our Bully Protection Workshops, we teach kids to use their height and reach to their advantage.
By standing tall—the same way we practice when shadow boxing—a child changes the dynamic immediately. They aren’t looking for a fight; they are simply showing they aren’t an easy target.
Rule Number One: Use Your Voice
Standing up for yourself doesn’t mean throwing the first punch. It means being vocal. We teach kids that they have to be “okay” with speaking up.
If someone is calling names or messing around, the first line of defense is a clear, firm command:
-
“Knock that off.”
-
“I’m not having that today.”
-
“Shut your mouth.”
Then, and only then, you walk away. This isn’t being a “tough guy”—it’s being a self-advocate.
Preparation for the “What If”
Of course, we also teach the physical skills needed to protect oneself if a situation becomes physical. But the real goal of Youth Martial Arts is to ensure the physical skills never have to be used. When a child knows they can defend themselves, they carry themselves with a quiet confidence that bullies tend to avoid.
