The Hard Truth About Bullying: Why Racine Parents Need to Build “Grit,” Not Just Awareness
I spent 10 years as an elementary school teacher. I have a Master’s degree in education. I’ve taught everything from the violin to the saxophone in public schools. And after a decade in the classroom and five decades on the martial arts mat, I’ve seen the “truth” about bullying:
Bullying was here 50 years ago, and it will be here 50 years from now.
It isn’t right, but it is a reality of life. There will always be someone who teases or pokes fun. The question isn’t how we can make the world perfectly nice—the question is: How do we teach our children to stand up for themselves?
The Problem with the “Dopamine Age”
In today’s world of instant-gratification video games and constant dopamine hits, many kids aren’t developing grit. Grit isn’t something you’re born with; it’s a muscle you build through constant challenges and being pushed outside your comfort zone.
If a child is used to the “easy” rewards of a screen and walks around with slumped shoulders and a lack of determination, they unfortunately become a target. I don’t like the term “victim”—what’s really happening is that the child hasn’t been given the tools to overcome obstacles or the “push” needed to handle a conflict.
How Karate Builds Bully-Proof Grit
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we provide the “push” that the modern world lacks. We teach kids to:
-
Look People in the Eye: We practice looking someone square in the face and saying, “Knock it off. I’m not doing that today.” * Fix Their Posture: A “slump-shouldered” walk attracts negative attention. We train kids to stand tall, use their height, and carry themselves with a presence that says they aren’t an easy target.
-
Overcome Real Obstacles: By facing physical and mental challenges on the mat, kids learn that they can handle pressure. That’s where real grit comes from.
Building Successful, Confident Adults
The goal isn’t just to stop a bully in 3rd grade. The goal is to ensure that child doesn’t grow up to be an adult who avoids every obstacle. When you teach a kid to push back and find their determination, you’re setting them up for a lifetime of success.
