Why Racine Kids are Losing Confidence (And How to Fix It)
It doesn’t matter if you’re in Wisconsin, New York, or California—kids are losing their confidence faster than ever. After five decades in martial arts, I’ve seen this shift firsthand. It isn’t a lack of talent or a lack of love from parents; it’s a lack of Grit.
We have unintentionally robbed a generation of the very thing they need to feel truly confident. There are two main culprits: instant gratification and the “participation award” culture.
The Dopamine Trap
I remember the jump from Atari to the original Super Mario Brothers. The second you hit that first question mark brick, a mushroom popped out and you got “big.” You got instant superpowers.
Today’s video games have taken that instant dopamine hit and put it on steroids. When kids are constantly rewarded for hitting a button, they never learn how to work, struggle, and push through an obstacle. They get the reward without the “grind,” and that leads to a very fragile, false sense of self-esteem.
The Problem with Participation Trophies
In the early 2000s, there was a massive push in education to give everyone a medal to “build confidence.” Fast forward twenty years, and where has that gotten us?
We now have a generation of kids—and even adults—with record-low self-confidence. Why? Because you can’t “give” someone confidence. Confidence is earned. When we reward kids just for showing up, we aren’t building them up; we are preventing them from developing the indomitable spirit they need to survive the real world.
The Science of the Grind: The TED Talk on Grit
If you want to understand what actually drives success, I highly recommend searching for the TED Talk on Grit. Researchers looked at every demographic—income, education, and background—and found one unquantifiable factor that predicted success: Grit.
Grit is the ability to grind. It’s the ability to fail, get a few “bumps and bruises,” and keep pushing anyway. That is what we do at Championship Martial Arts – Racine.
Developing an Indomitable Spirit
In our Youth Martial Arts Classes, it isn’t all “birthday cake and apple pie.” We don’t do participation trophies.
-
Kids have to earn their rank.
-
They have to push through physical challenges.
-
They have to overcome the frustration of a technique not working the first time.
By learning that “hurt feelings” aren’t the same thing as bullying, and that struggle is actually the pathway to growth, our students develop a level of confidence that can’t be shaken by a bad day or a tough challenge.

Stop putting your child in activities where they get a trophy just for standing on the grass. Put them in an environment where they have to grind to grow:
