Why “I Don’t Want to Go” is the Secret Battle in Racine Homes
If you are a parent in Racine, you’ve probably heard it: “I don’t want to go.” Whether it’s practice, a lesson, or even just a trip to the park, the resistance can be exhausting.
But before you feel like you’re failing or that your child is just “unmotivated,” you need to understand what you are actually fighting. You aren’t fighting your child’s personality; you are fighting a society-wide 10x increase in screens and dopamine.
The Screen Explosion: From 1 to 10
Think back to the ’90s. Most homes had one TV in the living room. Then, maybe we added one in the bedroom. Then came the one desktop computer.
Today, it isn’t just “one TV.” It’s multiple TVs, multiple laptops, tablets, and smartphones. We’ve gone from one or two screens to nearly a dozen in every household. And it doesn’t stop at home. As a former elementary school teacher, I’ve seen the shift from “Movie Fridays” on a rolling cart to every single student having their own laptop 24/7 at school.
The Dopamine Trap
Screens provide a constant, high-level stream of dopamine. When a child is “dopamined up” from a screen all day, any activity that requires physical effort feels like a letdown. That is why they say they don’t want to go. Their brain is telling them to stay where the “easy” reward is.
Unless you live in an Amish community, your family is dealing with this. It is the new “normal,” and it is what every parent in Racine, Mount Pleasant, and Caledonia is fighting against.
The Antidote: High-Adrenaline, Zero-Screen Activities
To break that screen fog, your child needs an activity that is the polar opposite of a tablet. I always recommend two:
-
Swimming: You have to move your whole body, and—most importantly—you can’t take a screen into the pool. It’s a life skill every kid needs so they don’t “swim like a rock.”
-
Martial Arts: There is no workout quite like having someone safely and in a controlled manner punching and kicking toward you. It forces the brain to “click in” and resets those dopamine levels through real physical adrenaline.
“I Want to Quit” is Normal
When your child says they want to quit an activity to stay home, remember: they are choosing the screen, not rejecting the activity. Whether it’s Youth Karate, dance, or gymnastics, the goal is to get them out of the house and into the real world.
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we understand this battle. We aren’t just teaching kicks; we are helping you win the fight against screen-induced burnout.
