It’s the #1 question we get from parents in Racine: “Do I need to buy a uniform before we show up for the first lesson?”
As a former elementary teacher with a Master’s in Education, I know that “First Day Jitters” are real—not just for the kids, but for the parents, too! You don’t want your child to stick out or feel like they’re “doing it wrong.”
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we want your child’s first experience to be about focus and grit, not about a wardrobe malfunction. Here is everything you need to know about what to wear for that big first day.
The Short Answer: Comfort is King
For your child’s first few lessons, you do not need a traditional karate uniform (Gi).
Think of the first class like a “Try Out Class.” We want them to move, kick, and have “Hard Fun” without worrying about a stiff white suit. The best outfit is simple:
-
A comfortable T-shirt (nothing too baggy or too tight).
-
Athletic shorts or sweatpants (denim or “button-up” pants are a no-go—we need that range of motion for those high kicks!).
-
No socks, no shoes (we train barefoot on our professional mats for better grip and safety).
Why Barefoot?
In the dojo, we leave our shoes at the door. This isn’t just a tradition; it’s a safety and hygiene standard. Training barefoot helps children develop better balance and proprioception (knowing where their body is in space). Plus, it keeps our Racine mats clean and ready for action!
The “Amazon” Trap
I see it all the time: a parent gets excited and orders a “Cobra Kai” style uniform on Amazon before the first class. While we love the enthusiasm, I recommend waiting. Most martial arts uniforms have a specific fit and weight, and we want to make sure your child gets the right one that represents our school’s standards once they decide to join the team.
Jewelry and Hair
For safety, we ask that all jewelry (earrings, necklaces, watches) be left at home or in your gym bag. If your child has long hair, a simple ponytail is perfect. It keeps the hair out of their eyes so they can stay focused on the instructor.
The Goal: Reducing “First Day Anxiety”
My goal as an educator is to remove every “barrier to success” for your child. When they show up in comfortable clothes, they aren’t worried about how they look—they’re focused on the “Black Belt Voice” they’re starting to develop.
The “Dummy-Proof” Guide for the First Class
-
Step 1: Keep it Simple – T-shirt and shorts/sweatpants. No “fancy” gear needed.
-
Step 2: Barefoot is Best – Be ready to kick off the sneakers at the door.
-
Step 3: Hydrate – Bring a water bottle! We work hard and have a lot of fun.
-
Step 4: Arrive 10 Minutes Early – This gives your child time to “acclimate” to the room before the noise and energy of the class starts.
