When we opened our doors over 20 years ago, maybe one out of every 10 or 15 families mentioned that their child had ADD or ADHD. Today, it feels like three out of four parents coming through our doors are struggling with the exact same challenge.
What was once treated as a rare condition has become the new normal. Between endless screen time at home and the fact that schoolwork is increasingly done on tablets and laptops, children are experiencing screen saturation like never before.
While limiting screen time is a huge part of the puzzle, the biggest issue high-energy kids face every single day is how traditional environments handle their natural physical drive.
If you have a child with ADD or ADHD, understanding how their brain and body operate is the key to unlocking their full potential.
🪑 1. The Classroom Trap: “Sit Down and Don’t Make a Peep”
In a traditional school setting, children are expected to sit down at a desk for six to seven hours a day, look at the board, stay completely quiet, and hold their energy inside. And if a high-energy child struggles to sit still? Far too often, their recess is taken away as a punishment!
Taking away a child’s physical outlet when they are already bursting with energy is a recipe for frustration. Kids simply aren’t wired to sit motionless for hours on end—they never were.
When I was in elementary school, I remember gazing out the window during class, just wishing I could run around outside, and getting in trouble for it. Kids need movement, physical feedback, and a constructive outlet to release their internal drive.
🥋 2. Structure Meets Movement: Our Version of the “Desk”
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we don’t expect kids to sit still—we give them a structured way to move!
We still teach high levels of discipline and body awareness, but our version of a “desk” looks completely different:
-
Standing at Attention: Students line up with purpose—chin up, shoulders back, chest out, and eyes focused forward.
-
Active Engagement: Instead of passive listening, children learn physical techniques that demand full mind-body coordination.
-
Loud Vocal Outlets: We don’t want quiet, timid students. We want loud, empowered students! All of that “karate yelling” (our traditional Kiai) gives kids permission to be vocal, strong, and confident.
Learning to be loud and assertive on the mats builds the exact vocal boundary-setting kids need to protect themselves against school bullies and stand up for themselves in the real world.
🥷 3. Unlocking Their Inner Ninja
Children with ADD and ADHD don’t suffer from a lack of focus—they suffer from a lack of interest in sitting still. When you harness their natural enthusiasm and let them unleash their inner Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or Ninja Turtle, their focus skyrockets.
Through physical martial arts drills, heavy bag work, and clear belt milestones, kinetic kids learn how to channel their energy into self-control. They learn to be tough, strong, and focused, developing the lifelong grit needed to navigate academic and social challenges.
