Think back to the original Super Mario Brothers. You walk across the screen, hit that first question mark brick, and—boom—out pops a mushroom. You get big. You get superpowers.
As a kid in the ’80s, I didn’t realize what that was doing to my brain, but it was an instant dopamine hit. It made me want to hit the next brick, and the next, seeking that next hit of “power.” Fast forward to today’s games, and that cycle is on a completely different level.
The Problem with “Digital Superpowers”
In a video game, you get rewarded instantly. You get the points, the skins, and the level-ups without the physical “grind.” This creates a false sense of confidence. When kids are constantly hit with that digital dopamine, they don’t have the opportunity to develop Grit.
Grit isn’t something you can download. It’s the ability to push through something difficult, to fail, to try again, and to eventually win through effort.
Trading the Controller for the Mat
This is exactly why kids with a lot of screen time thrive in our Youth Martial Arts Classes. For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve had to “grind” in the real world.
In karate class, you don’t just hit a button to get stronger. You have to:
-
Learn how to physically block a kick or parry a strike.
-
Master complex self-defense moves like escaping a headlock or a front choke.
-
Push yourself to punch harder and kick faster through consistent practice.
-
Compete and spar with a partner in a safe, high-energy environment.
The Science of Success: The TED Talk on Grit
If you want to see why this matters for your child’s future, I highly recommend searching for the TED Talk on Grit. It’s one of the few I’ve watched from start to finish. The research shows that the biggest predictor of a successful adult isn’t IQ or talent—it’s the ability to consistently overcome objectives.
They call that Grit, and it’s exactly what we build at Championship Martial Arts – Racine.
Real-World Leveling Up
In our Youth Karate Classes, kids aren’t just making a character stronger—they are becoming personally stronger, more fit, and more focused. They are learning that the “grind” is where the real reward lives.
