The 10x Screen Trap: Why Racine Kids Struggle to Focus
If you feel like your child is constantly “squirrel-ing” or getting distracted, you aren’t imagining it. But here is the truth: Kids aren’t born differently today than they were in the ’80s. What has changed is the environment.
Back in the day, most Racine homes had maybe one or two screens (and we’re talking prehistoric tube TVs). Fast forward to today, and between smartphones, tablets, and computers, most homes have 10 times the number of screens. We have literally 10xed the distractions at home and at school, and then we wonder why focus has dropped.
Focus is a Skill, Not an Instinct
In elementary, middle, and high school, kids are taught arithmetic, reading, and history. Those are important, but schools don’t usually teach how to focus. Focus is a muscle, and right now, that muscle is being weakened by 24/7 digital stimulation.
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we break focus down into three physical “anchors” that kids can understand and repeat.
The Three Pillars of Focus: Eyes, Ears, Body
When a student steps onto our mat, we don’t just tell them to “pay attention.” We give them a checklist:
-
Eyes: You have to make eye contact with the person talking. In a world of screens, looking someone in the eye is becoming a lost art. We train kids to lock in their vision.
-
Ears: Looking isn’t always listening. We teach students to “open their ears” to actually process instructions the first time they are given.
-
Body: You can’t learn if you’re slumped over. We teach students to stand tall and take pride in their posture. A focused body leads to a focused mind.
Breaking the “Slump”
Most of the day, kids are hunched over a tablet or a desk. This “slumped” posture is the opposite of a learning state. In our Youth Martial Arts Classes, we reinforce these anchors constantly. When we ask, “What are the three ways to focus?” our students chant back: “Eyes, Ears, Body, Sir!” It becomes a habit that they take back to the classroom and to the dinner table.
Combat the Digital Distraction
You are working against a 10x increase in screens. To win that battle, your child needs a structured environment where they can practice the skill of focus without a power button nearby.
