Bullying has been around since our parents were kids, and it will likely be around when our kids have kids. But the “Safe Zone” has changed. When we were growing up in Racine, home was the place where you could escape. Today, with phones, social media, and even AI, the bullying follows them into their bedrooms.
As a former elementary teacher with a Master’s in Education, I’ve seen the cycle from the inside of the classroom. Most programs focus on “reporting,” but they miss the most important preventative tool: The Target Profile.
The Black Belt Posture: Ending the Target Look
Bullies are looking for a specific visual profile. They look for the child with their shoulders down, head tucked, and zero eye contact. They are looking for someone who looks like they can be bullied.
At Championship Martial Arts – Racine, we train the “Black Belt Posture.” We teach our students to walk with their chin up and chest out. Not to be aggressive, but to look confident. When a child looks strong and carries themselves with grit, they often stop being a target before a single word is even spoken.
The Black Belt Voice: “I Don’t Have Time for You”
Physical self-defense is the last resort. The first resort is the Black Belt Voice. We don’t teach kids to get into “shouting matches.” We teach them to throw their voice with authority.
It is okay for a child to tell a bully, “Shut your mouth. I don’t have time for you today,” and then simply walk away. By developing a voice that commands respect, they are “throwing” their confidence at the problem instead of their fists.
The Team Gap: Why Kids Don’t Tell Their Parents
In our “Bully-Proof” workshops at the Racine dojo, we do a role-playing exercise where we ask kids, “Who is on your team?” The results are often heartbreaking for parents. Kids will name their teacher, their friend, or the principal—but quite often, they don’t name their parents. They don’t feel they have the “script” to talk to you about it, or they worry about your reaction.
We bridge that gap by having parents and children role-play the conversation right on our mats. We coach the child on how to report the issue and coach the parent on how to reach out to the school effectively.
Developing Grit in a Digital Age
Bullying is a test of temperament. We want our Racine students to have the grit to ignore the “stupid” things people say online while having the posture to stand their ground in person. We aren’t just teaching them to “throw hands”; we are teaching them how to be the most confident version of themselves.
