As parents, we sign our kids up for all kinds of seasonal sports and extracurricular hobbies—soccer, baseball, gymnastics, dance, or music lessons. While those activities offer great recreational value, there are two fundamental physical skills that every child should spend extensive time mastering as they grow up.
I have a very strong opinion on this, but I truly believe these aren’t just fun pastimes—they are essential life skills.
The two non-negotiable activities every child needs are swimming and self-defense.
Here is why both belong at the top of every parent’s priority list in Racine.
🏊 1. Swimming: A Non-Negotiable Safety Skill
First on the list is swimming. Every child should take structured swim lessons for at least a couple of years.
You don’t need your child to swim like an Olympic rocket or win competitive swim meets, but they must possess solid, real-world water skills. Whether at a lake, pool party, or family vacation, knowing how to navigate the water safely is a life-saving skill that every child deserves to have in their back pocket.
🥋 2. Self-Defense: Preparing for an “Ugly World”
The second essential activity is self-defense training through martial arts.
Let’s be realistic: the world can get ugly sometimes. Whether it’s a young child facing a physical bully on the school playground or an adult encountering a dangerous situation down the road, physical conflict is a reality of life.
Having the knowledge, physical technique, and situational awareness to defend yourself isn’t a luxury—it is a fundamental safety skill. Every child and adult should have some form of structured self-defense training so they never feel helpless when confronted by aggression.
🦁 3. From “Anti-Bully” to “Pro-Stand Up for Yourself”
Beyond the physical ability to defend against a punch or a grab, martial arts provides something even deeper: unshakeable personal confidence and home self-discipline.
For decades, schools and society have focused heavily on being “anti-bully.” While anti-bullying awareness is wonderful, awareness alone doesn’t give a child the internal strength to handle a real conflict.
Kids don’t just need anti-bullying campaigns—they need to be pro-standing up for themselves!
In our dojo, we teach children to stand tall with active confidence:
-
Chin Up, Chest Out: Physical posture communicates strength and self-assurance before a bully ever opens their mouth.
-
Vocal Authority: Kids practice using a firm, clear voice to set firm boundaries.
-
Earned Self-Esteem: Success on the mat builds a strong mental anchor that makes children resilient against peer pressure and classroom stress.
