Walk into almost any elementary school in Racine, and you’re bound to see massive banners hanging in the hallways proclaiming a “Zero Bullying Policy.” While the intention behind these banners is wonderful, every parent knows the reality: bullying still happens. The biggest flaw with zero-tolerance policies is that they often force the children being picked on to remain completely passive. Parents and teachers tell kids to “just ignore them.” But ignoring a bully only works for so long before a child gets treated like a doormat.
If we want to protect our children from verbal and physical aggression, we have to move beyond passive slogans and give them real-world tools to stand up for themselves.
🗣️ 1. Teaching Your Child to Speak Up with Voice Authority
Confident kids get picked on far less, but no child is 100% immune to playground teasing, pushing, or name-calling.
When someone crosses the line, your child needs the immediate confidence to set a clear boundary. We teach kids to drop their voice, add a little “raspiness” to their tone, look the bully straight in the eye, and assertively say:
“Hey! Knock it off or I’m going to report you to the teacher!”
Assertive posture and strong voice authority immediately signal to a bully that your child is not an easy target.
🎭 2. Don’t Just Tell Them What to Do—Role-Play It at Home!
You can’t just give your child verbal advice and expect them to remember it in a high-stress moment. You have to actively role-play the scenario at home!
Make it a lighthearted, playful family game so your child doesn’t feel anxious:
-
Lightly tease them using goofy, non-offensive names like “Apple Head” or “Silly Goose.”
-
Have your child practice standing tall (chin up, chest out), using strong eye contact, and projecting a firm “Knock it off!”
-
Practice walking away with calm, unshakeable confidence to report the incident.
When children physically practice standing up for themselves in a safe environment, muscle memory takes over when real conflict arises on the playground.
🤝 3. The Shocking Truth: Are You on Your Child’s “Team”?
When we host youth anti-bullying workshops at our dojo, we ask the kids a simple question: “Who is on your team if someone is bullying you at school?”
Nearly 9 out of 10 times, children list teachers, guidance counselors, principals, or church leaders—and they don’t bring up their own parents at all!
If parents get mentioned, they are almost always brought up last. Many children assume their parents will get upset, overreact, or dismiss their feelings. As parents, we must explicitly tell our kids: “I am on your team no matter what. You can always come to me when something happens.”
