Over 20 years ago, in the early 2000s, a major shift swept through youth sports and school environments: the rise of the participation trophy.
Having spent a decade working as an elementary school teacher while earning my master’s degree in education, I remember asking fellow teachers why we were handing out awards to every single child regardless of achievement. The common response was: “We don’t want to discourage anyone, and we want to constantly build their confidence.”
Fast forward two decades, and society is seeing the result of that experiment: a generation of young people struggling with confidence because everything was handed to them rather than earned.
Children are far smarter than adults give them credit for. They know the difference between a trophy given for simply showing up and real, earned self-esteem.
At Championship Martial Arts, we say NO to participation trophies. Here is how our structured, 3-month testing cycle builds genuine self-confidence, grit, and real-world resilience in Racine kids.
🗓️ 1. Our 3-Month Curriculum & Testing Roadmap
Confidence isn’t built overnight—it is constructed step-by-step through clear, achievable benchmarks. Instead of testing students once every 6 months, we break down our curriculum into a structured 90-day cycle:
-
Month 1 (The First Half): Students learn the first quarter of their material in weeks 1–2, and the second quarter in weeks 3–4. At the end of month 1, we conduct a class-wide, on-floor progress check so students get used to performing in front of their peers.
-
Month 2 (The Second Half): We pivot to the second half of the curriculum. At the end of month 2, students complete a second class-wide progress evaluation on the mat.
-
Month 3 (Integration & Individual Testing): We combine the entire curriculum together for heavy repetition, technical adjustments, and skill refinement. At the end of month 3, every student completes individualized, 1-on-1 testing to demonstrate total mastery.
⏱️ 2. Performing Under Pressure: Why Kids Need It
Parents often tell us: “My child doesn’t do well under pressure.”
Our answer is always simple: Children struggle under pressure only because they don’t get enough structured opportunity to practice it!
When a child stands in front of their instructor for an individualized evaluation, their heart beats a little faster. But when they push through that nervousness, execute their techniques, and earn their new rank, their confidence explodes! They realize that pressure isn’t something to fear—it is something they can overcome through preparation and grit.
⚾ 3. The Major League Baseball Analogy (Different Batting Averages)
Does no participation trophies mean every child has to be perfect? Absolute not!
Think of professional baseball. Every player in Major League Baseball has earned their spot on the field, yet every player has a different batting average.
The exact same thing happens on our karate floor. Some yellow belts are faster kickers, while others have sharper blocks or better self-defense focus. What matters isn’t being identical to the person next to you—it’s putting in the work, showing grit, and continually improving your personal “batting average.”
