The month of September brings about many changes for kids, first and foremost being the return to school. Gone are the days of sleeping in, hours upon hours playing outside in the sun, and endless free time. Once September comes it is back to daily grind of early wake-ups, long school days, homework, and activities. This change can be a challenge for kids, which is why we choose FOCUS as our Word of the Month in September.
Often as parents of kids, we find ourselves reminding them to stay focused- whether that’s on their homework, helping with chores, or practicing for an activity. But do they truly understand what focus really means? With our martial arts students, we define focus as “concentrating on what you are doing NOW.” When we focus on something, we give it our full attention. You can’t focus on something if you are not in the present moment. We want to clear our mind and think about the task they are trying to achieve. When you concentrate on what you are trying to accomplish…. that’s focus.
So during the month of September, discuss FOCUS with your martial arts student. Ask them what being focused looks like and sounds like. Encourage them to think about what they learn during our weekly mat chats, and to apply it not just in the karate dojo, but also in school and at home.
